Who should you approach?
Start locally. Build a list of independent agencies, corporate branches, lettings specialists and property-management businesses that you can reach reliably. Find the branch manager’s name where possible instead of sending a generic message to every company.
What should you say?
Keep your approach short and specific. Introduce yourself, explain your current stage, state why you want to understand estate agency and offer realistic availability. Ask whether you could shadow the team or support basic office activity for a defined period.
How to make the experience count
- Arrive early and dress in line with the branch.
- Take notes on terminology, systems and the customer journey.
- Ask sensible questions at appropriate moments.
- Volunteer for useful basic tasks without overstating what you can do.
- Observe how staff speak to buyers, sellers, landlords and tenants.
- Protect customer confidentiality and follow instructions carefully.
Turn the placement into CV evidence
Record what you observed and supported: preparing viewing information, updating records, researching local property, accompanying viewings or seeing how feedback is handled. Ask whether the manager is comfortable being contacted as a reference, and send a concise thank-you message.
A placement does not guarantee a job, but it makes your motivation easier to believe and gives you better examples for applications and interviews.
