A rejection does not reveal the cause. A repeated pattern does. Use the checks below to identify where your job search is breaking down before you invest more time in the same approach.
1. You are targeting the wrong level or type of role
A strong candidate can still receive no response when the vacancy requires experience they have not demonstrated. Compare the essential responsibilities—not only the job title—with your evidence.
- Are you applying for valuer roles without instruction-winning evidence?
- Are you targeting management without team or branch responsibility?
- Are you applying across sales, lettings and property management with one generic CV?
- Are you rejecting suitable stepping-stone roles because the title sounds junior?
2. Your CV describes tasks but not value
“Conducted viewings and dealt with applicants” explains activity, but it does not distinguish you. Add accurate evidence of targets, conversions, fees, portfolio size, reviews, retention, progression or responsibility.
3. Your positioning is unclear
Your CV profile, recent experience and LinkedIn headline should tell a consistent story. Conflicting dates, an unexplained career change or a profile that could describe anyone creates uncertainty.
- Name the type and level of property role you want.
- Explain a genuine career change briefly and positively.
- Make location, notice period and relevant qualifications easy to understand.
- Use terminology employers actually use, but only where it accurately describes your experience.
4. A practical requirement is blocking you
Some negotiator roles require travel to viewings and valuations, while hours can include Saturdays. Location, driving status, salary expectations, right to work and availability may all affect shortlisting. Address relevant practical points accurately rather than leaving the employer to guess.
5. You are applying quickly but not strategically
Job boards make it easy to submit many applications. That does not make every application competitive.
- Shortlist. Choose vacancies where your evidence genuinely matches the essential work.
- Adapt. Reorder and adjust your profile and achievements for the role.
- Research. Know the employer, branch, market and likely customer base.
- Record. Track applications, dates, contacts and outcomes.
- Review the pattern. If ten well-matched applications produce nothing, change the CV or positioning before sending another ten.
What if you get interviews but no offers?
That usually points to a different stage of the process: preparation, examples, communication, commercial knowledge, salary alignment or interview follow-up. Use the estate agency interview guide rather than repeatedly rewriting the CV.
